Hi bolters

Need some wisdom to remove a smoked almost black film applied by previous owner to my GMC 59 rear window. Large window version. I wouldnt like to try with a knife. Is it there any other way to avoid scratching my windows?. Any help will be very much appreciated.

razor blade scraper?
followed by solvent and 000 steel wool to get the glue off....

I have the same problem to deal with on my 52 ...it has an aftermarket slider with some real crappy type of window tint ..I am gonna try to soften the film with Acetone an then go after it with a razor scraper and then clean up the glue with Acetone or Paint Thinner ..?

try a heat gun or hair dryer, warm it up and slice it off with a razor blade - softening the stickum should make it come off cleaner

I have heated old crap tint & peeled off with a razor blade. You will still have a lot of glue to clean up but it will come off with some ebow grease.Do it in an area with lots of fresh air. The ones I have done the old glue stinks pretty badly, but will go away in no time.

I don't know what they used for the old tint, but when I got the tint done on my daily driver, the guy said not to use ammonia-based window cleaner on it, as it is what pros use to remove old tint. I've not used it, so I can't say for sure, but if he's right, just try some ammonia, might just take it right off.

Like Alan said, though: Do it in the fresh air, don't want any casualties :P

the film should pull off if you can get a corner started with a razor blade and i have used windshield washer fluid in a squirt bottle on the glue. spray on let it sit a couple minutes and use the razor blade to scrape it off, cleans off paint overspray too!

razor blade and windex, works like a charm

The hot air gun technique works pretty well (just don't melt your seals! ) and a good fresh razor blade.
As the other guys have said,decent glass cleaner and razor takes care of any residue.
As Alan said the old gum stinks!
