I have a 1959 Apache that has never had a radio in the dash. I bought a used radio from a fellow bolter and he bought it from ChevyDuty (one that is made to fit my Bolt). I am wondering if I should just get one of those under-seat speakers?or should I get an overhead speaker (like the origionals)? what have you guys done?

I used both. I have a pair of speakers mounted behind the seat (came with the truck) and I installed an overhead speaker. I bought the assembly and stereo speaker from ChevyDuty. It's fine. I'm using the AudioSound radio from ChevyDuty.

I bought the Custom Autosound radio from Chevy Duty ... my install notes are Here

Then I built sound-insulated boxes for two Sony X-Plode speakers ... I have them on the floor, side kick panels, but have decided the best place for them is going to be behind the seats. I'll be adding that info to my page when I get to it but until then, here's the way I built the boxes: Click Here

depending on how your truck sounds [how well insulated from engine and road noise], it can work best to have a speaker between the visors as original, maybe w/ other better quality ones where ever, but when you're on the road, sound from the ones behind or under the seat or in the doors or kicks don't get to your ears well in my experience, [unless maybe behind the seat, close to the top pointing up] - noisey ol original trucks for me, speaker where GM put it grin

Also, more than two speakers in such a small space just tends to make the sound muddy. I'm thinking about moving my seakers into that very convenient "well" of space, left and right, just behind the door strikers and about shoulder height ... maybe a bit lower.

I have an original overhead speaker cover wiht a new Brother's speaker in it that I bought on ebay. The sound is perfect for the original AM radio it is hooked up to.

If I had an AM/FM radio installed, I would go with "under-the-seat" speakers instead.

I just love how simple these trucks are compared to the stuff on the road today.

It would be great to see a picture of that, Jim!

Man ... you can say that again -- same here! I love my truck so much -- after 3 years of daily driving, I still get the same rush of excitement every time I have to go somewhere. And when I ride in someone else's car or truck, all I can think of is how much more I enjoy my stovebolt.

Hey Alan,
I am new to the "Daily Driver" and I am just now working out the buggs of a Bolt sitting too much.
I was wondering how others liked it. I see that you still get a kick out of driving your BOLT.
The only thing I want in my 59 is an OLD/AIR unit,
cuz here in Mineral Wells TX it can get a little HOT(or it could just be global warming)in the summer.

Hey, Cliff

I put the Hurricane AC/heater in mine and wouldn't want to be without it!

Here is a link to the page on my website that shows the parts before they were installed. I can't find a good picture of the actual speaker installed. I will take one this weekend and post it for you. Here is the link:

Take care!

Does anyone have a template for cutting the speaker hole? The accessory installation manual mentions one, but doesn't give a copy.

Thanks

pretty easy to use the speaker cover to mark it out - it has a notch to fit over the mirror bracket to locate it, you can mark the screw holes and measure from there for the speaker magnet hole
