I used spar varnish after dicussing it with a cousin whos husband does home and wood restoration. The top reacted badly to the UV and started to peel. The bottom was very sound, so I only did the tops and overlapped it on the sides. I beleive the bottoms will be OK as there isn't any UV hitting them. I also have a rubber floor mat that I'll use to cover the wood when the UV is really bad in the summer.
