I got the 216 pulled and the bell housing removed to install on the 235 I have sitting in the corner. I looked real hard at installing the 261 I recently overhauled, but the 261 is not quite done and I don't have the extra cash sitting around to finish it right.
The 235 has been overhauled and ran good when a buddy of mime parted out his farm truck. If tomorrow is as nice as today, I should get the 235 sitting in it's new home tomorrow afternoon.
What really surprised me about the 216 is that the starter worked at all. In the 15 years the '42 set in a tree claim, the mouse nests in the flywheel area gathered enough moisture to rust some of the teeth off the starter ring gear. The clutch surface on the flywheel was deeply pitted. I guess that explained the 'chunk' noise I hear while cranking the engine over.
It will be nice to have a 235 under the hood, although the 261 (bored .030) would have been better had finances allowed.

I got the 235 set in the '42 with a few minor but not insurmountable problems. I just hooked it up to the OEM crashbox tranny because I don't have time or $$$ to switch over to the synchronized M-420 I have sitting around.
It was a nice benefit to listen to the B-24 flying overhead while I was working.

I will have to lower the stock radiator as the fan blades hit the lower radiator neck. There is enough metal on the radiator to do this--I just have to drill some new holes.
The throttle linkage will have to be shortened about 2".
This engine came with solenoid starter. I remember reading something about the bendix and starter teeth being different between the stock six and 12 volt starters and sure enough the 12 volt starter is a little smaller all around. This means I can't use my foot starter anymore, but I'll survive. In the lower left corner of the dash is a button labeled 'start'. I have always been a little curious about that button--it that stock?? I will use this location for my new starter switch.
I hope to get back to the truck this weekend and get it finished--I am almost finished with a tractor I overhauled and need the truck to transport the tractor back to it's home. I'll try to remember the camera this weekend. The truck looks a little funny with the front clip removed and laying in pieces on the bed.

WOW! What a difference!! The 216 had enough of a load with just the truck by itself getting up to speed, but this 235 really seems to have a lot of power. I may be able to get up to 50 mph on the highway now instead of 35 before. I did notice the RH rear wheel is leaking AGAIN    . They say there is no speedy sleeve made for this size seal, so I will have to figure something out. With all this additional power, I had better have good brakes!!!! Sorry Ron, I was over at the shop and had been working for about an hour before I realized I forgot the digital camera. Just picture a truck with no grill and fenders running down the road.
