There is an intermediate shaft between the tranny and the transfer case. So I'm looking for a 5 or 6 speed, 2WD tranny that will handle 6000 lbs. 3.91 gears, I'd be happy to have a bellhousing made. All the trannys I find don't look heavy enough to handle the load. Any suggestions?

Most versions had fifth gear direct, but there was a version in which fifth was overdrive. They are pretty big though(used in the bigger trucks of that period) and getting hard to find.

Both should easily hold up to any motor of that era; they are used behind the cummins. Easy to adapt to 350-style bellhousing pattern. NV4500 rated at 19500# GVW, with .73 OD. NV 5600 rated at 26000# GVW, .73 OD. Just a thought.
