1969 K20 , with a '67 front clip. fleetside. 292, 3x1 offy, headers. sm465 4spd. getting put back together, almost ready for paint. doing it all myself. 19 and lovin' it. "proper" is so over-rated. .later days. .sam.

#31348 11/26/2004 4:54 AM | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 52 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 52 | Sam, if your truck has an SM420 transmission (4spd with granny first gear) it will have a plate on the side of the transmission case held on with 6 bolts. It is located on the drivers side of the transmission. Here is a picture of what the plate looks like (behind the exhaust pipe) I have picked up several PTOs that bolt onto the side of the transmission, the units I have are made by Chelsea and are used to drive a hydraulic pump via. a short driveline. They could just as easily drive a winch through the proper drivetrain. A short linkage goes to the cab, just press in the clutch, pull on the lever to engage the PTO and ease out the clutch . . . works great!

If you're going to use a capstan-type winch, you'll probably need the type with forward and reverse positions on it. If you can find a winch from an old wrecker, there should be forward and reverse clutches on it, and you can get by with a single-direction PTO.

#31350 11/26/2004 8:01 PM | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 154 Member | | Member Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 154 | thanx for the replys guys! that helps me over the first step..my 68 has a sm420. or atleast a 4 speed granny. so we'll see. and i was discussing it with my dad, and he said that if we could figure out the PTO, we'd just run a hydraulic pump. so, how much do those chelsea PTO's run? or...we have most of a farmall tractor out back, with a PTO shaft i'm sure, so..is there a way to make that work? thanx for your help guys!
