Just wondering if anybody has installed a Pontiac 326-455 in your truck? I'm considering a Pontiac since I have a 326 and a 400 here in my shop. Thinking about a 4 speed O/D automatic as well. Any comments are appreciated! Dean

It shouldn't be a problem other then the four speed automatic. Pontiac never used one so some sort of adapter will be required. About the only bolt in I can think of is a multi bolt pattern case Turbo 350 with lock up converter. The late 70's used this case. It fits BOP, Caddy, and Chevrolet. As far as the motor goes, don't waste your money on the 326. Parts cost just the same for the 400 and you will much happier with the bigger cubic inch motor. I would sell both of them and look for a 455, then you would have something that would haul @&%!

I had a 1960 Pontiac Catalina 2 dr hard top had the 389 and a 4 speed automatic. Surprised me when I first got to drive it. Shifted once, then twice, then a third time around 45mph. I expected it to be a three speed. It would run down the road mighty fine.

i say...go for it! the 455 was a monstrous engine. have one out back in a 71 Olds Delta 88. talk about a tank. stories are you could measure your speed by the way the gas guage dropped, and tires were a weekly event. LoL. but yeah. go for it. theres no challenging the 455 rocket for torque. just the oiling system was a drawback..but hey. take the god with the bad.

thats true about the gas i had a66 gto with a 455 super duty 4 spd. on a week end id burn 2 tanks of gas in one night never had a car sence that would do that i could also burn the tires off the rims with the car not even moving

Well, a 200r4 should have a universal bolt pattern and bolt up to a poncho. However, its lifespan would be quite dependant on how the trans was (re)built and the torque put out by your pontiac. The 400 could put a 200r4 in a world of hurt in short order if it was stout and the trans was stock. There are adapter kits for the 700 4r available from places like Summit, and the 700s tend to stand up but a lot of that depends on how it was (re)built too.
This can be done without too much extra hassle over a sbc so don't get intimidated.

The 700 won't be a direct bolt in but it can be done. If you build the motor right you shouldn't need overdrive. My dads been dragracing Pontiacs since the mid 50's. He now runs a 71 Lemans wagon with a race built 455. The car weighs 4050lbs and has run as fast as 11.32 @ 116 mph with DOT radials and full exhaust system. Fact he drives it to the dragstrip. It uses a 3.31 gear ratio! Due to the high torque of the motor, it doesn't need a steep gear. You could do the same thing, gear it down and use a tall tire. My little 250 inline can pull a 3.08 with a 29" tall tire as fast as you want to drive. Your Pontiac motor shouldn't have any problem with a 3.08 or 3.23 with a 31" tire. That works out to about 2150 rpm at 65 with a 3.08 or 2275 with a 3.23. Joe
