This is a reminder to those newbies like myself to use thread/gasket sealer on bolts that go through castings.
I recently installed my 3 speed trans and had a 3 inch stream of oil from the input shaft area in 2 days of sitting idle. I knew that I had replaced the front trans cover gasket and couldn't figure out the problem. I was dreading splitting the drive shaft and pulling it back out - but hate oil leaks worse than 4 hours of work.
The culprit was the bolts holding the input shaft cover on. They were leaking out the threads - put sealer on and everything is now tight.
The manual calls for 1-1/2 pints of oil for the transmission. Don't overfill. You will be surprised how far down the fill hole that puts the oil level.
