Can anyone tell me where the casting numbers for a 1967 ( I think ...don't know for sure) GMC inline 6 are? It is for sure not a 235 or a 292. I think it is a 250. I can't seem to find the correct numbers. I got some numbers from a stamping pad just behind the distributor (F0522JK). The Head reads 3836848. and the Tranny reads 233952645.

I've checked with inliners.org and stovebolt.com but I don't seem to have the right numbers.

I want to make sure what motor and transmission I am dealing with.

By the way I got the truck with the transmission removed from the motor and no bolts any where. Can anyone please tell where I can buy or what types of bolts I need for the clutch and the ones needed to attach the tranny to the motor.

Could it be a 235???
'see the owner told me it was a 250cid so I went and bought a clutch kit for a 250. Do you know if this would still fit...or if there is any difference in transmissions for a 235 and a 250?

Thanks,TD

If the motor's original it's a 230/250/292 variant. Just like the Chevies. It probably is actually a 250 as you were told. Clutch should be fine. Can't help with the rest. Somebody will be along soon. wink

Easiest way to i.d. the 250 series block is the spin-on oil filter mount, just ahead of the distributor. If it's a 230/250, the fuel pump is aft of the distributor, followed by the motor mount. If it's a 292 the motor mount is between the fuel pump and distributor. The casting number you need is just aft of the passenger side motor mount (250) or fuel pump (292), should have a large GM below it.

If it's a 235 series the casting number is either above or behind the starter.

Tranny id. Is it a 3 speed or 4 speed? Makes a difference.

Best way to determine the clutch is to compare to what you have, if you have the old clutch. Otherwise, do the bolt holes align with the flywheel, and does the disc fit on the tranny shaft?

Go back and see if you can find the block casting number. It will be on distributor side about middle of the block right below the lifter covers. The head casting number does not match anything in my books. Get the block date code as well. Joe

It is already in a 1967 GMC. But it doen't look like a 250. But I can't seem to find the darn casting numbers. The oil filter is on the drivers side. The side covers on the passenger's side have the bolt on the perimeter of the cover and not in the middle. The left side looks as follows from front of motor to the back.
First the fuel pump, then the vent tube, then the motor mount, then the distributor, then the dip stick, then the starter. I went out and bought the I-6 book recommended in the earlier posts but I just cant find the casting numbers on the block and the casting numbers on the head are not listed in the book. Go figure.

AW the heck with it! I just got an offer to trade for a '64 Chevy P/U with a 283 sbc... we'll see.
grin
Thanks, TD

Just look one more time. Just above the oil pan lip to block, pass side, mid engine. Clean the eng good and you'll see the #. Lower middle, pass side. I can post a pic. Let me know.

Did any 235s have side mounts?

I would have said no, but as I think about it, I really don't know about the last couple years, when V-8s were already being side-mounted.

Sorry all for the alias, couldnt remember my dang password, and, yep I'm a 'bolt junkie.
Deuce, an apology, I just looked at a 235 tonight and I can't find the casting x reference for my #'s either at inliners site... frustrating. 348675 - Who knows?

What transmission is tied to that motor??

Its got to older than the 250 292 motors due to the vent pipe. They quit using them when the 235 went away. Joe
