When starting out in first gear, especially if going up hill, I get a shuddering as I release the clutch. It seems to be worse when cold and ease up after driving. I had an old D**** truck that I drove for years that did the same thing. Only happens in first gear. Is this normal, or do I have a transmission/clutch problem? Appreciate your help.

Common but not normal. Check for oil getting on
the cluth. check for loose bolts holding trans.
in or bell housing. Check for bad or loose engine
& trans. mounts.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Had an old work truck that did that. Mine was very tiny cracks in the flywheel, I think they were caused by heat. I took the flywheel and had it resurfaced at a machine shop and it fixed it for a while. With time the problem would reoccur.

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it can not be overcome by brute force and ignorance.

i am going to tell you this, although you might not beleive it. a guy sold me a 73 or 74 pickup with a clutch chatter in when going in reverse,he gave me a good deal because he was sure that it needed clutch work, and it did shake the truck[i think reverse was geared a little higher than first]. anyway, i did a tuneup first when i got some spare time, plugs, wires, distributer cap, ect. and low and behold, no more chatter in reverse, and i didn't touch the clutch. i can't honestly explain why the truck would shake like it did, but some aspect of the tuneup fixed it. hope this helps. good luck

Apache,

If you have noticed on a clutch plate there is some springs that go around the hub. These are buffer springs and when the flywheel and pressure plate grab the clutch disc, the springs take the snap out of the take-off. When these springs over-heat or get a lot of use, they become week and cause your problem, so you will need a new clutch disc and while you are in there, replace the pressure plate and release bearing and check the flywheel for cracks, Be sure to lube the pilot bearing before assembly.

Make certain the pilot bushing in the crank end is not frozen as well.

I had the same problem, my cause turned out to be oil on the clutch plate from a leaky rear main seal.

As a matter of fact, I have a slight leak in the rear main seal also------just have not gotten to it yet. Thanks for the lead.
