I have a '61 K10 truck with a 4 speed transmission - on the floor. Engine is the 235. I have two questions - since I've had the truck, the transmission grinds when shifting into 4th. It's never changed, better or worse, but it's always been there. If I double-clutch, it does not grind. What causes this? I've had this truck 15 years with the same behavior.

It has recently started popping out of third gear when not under load - like if I'm coasting down a hill in third gear.

Should I be worried about either issue? I'm running regular 80W-90 in the tranny and transfer case. Thanks in advance!!

4th gear grind is bad syncro. 3rd poping out probably is too. only issue is both are irritating. probably work that way for a long time. my 57 3spd had no syncros left when I got it [was previously an ambulance] and worked the same for another 30,000mi till I parked it for future resto. it poped out of third on the highway too.

Bill grin

Nothing a rebuild kit wouldn`t hurt smile
It may go on that way for a long time.

Mine did the same thing. The problem was excessive end play in the output shaft. You need to shim back to factory spec.

if it dosen't need fixed, break it

Thanks for the info! It sounds like I'll be okay with the way it is for a while. In the meantime, I'll keep the fluids fresh and full.
