I an attempting to adjust the valves on my 230, due to tickng from upper end. Engine has sat for years, I have had it running maybe 2 months, I have run it maybe 100 miles. Did it shut off using tdc/firing order. Still ticking, decided to run engine. When the rocker stops tapping & I turn any more to set preload I get a valve hanging open. I removed one lifter, disassembled & cleaned it, nothing major noted, but seems "springy" now. Clean them all? Brian

You're wasting your time with a running adjustment attempt. When you loosen the adjuster enough to get a noise, the lifter is topped out against the snap ring, and it will take it some time to get back down to normal running height as it's tightened. In the meantime, the cylinder will miss.
With the engine stopped, and each cylinder at top dead center of the compression stroke, loosen the adjuster until there's slack, then tighten it slowly to remove the clearance, then tighten about 3/4 to 1 turn further. By the time you get through all 12 adjustments, the first ones will have bled down to the correct running height. Wait 15 minutes after the last valve is adjusted, and crank up. No mess, no fuss, and no noisy lifters. If this procedure doesn't work, invest 3 bucks each, and replace the lifters.

Tried again & still have tapping from rockers/lifters, left valve cover loose & pulled it off, some are oiling the fenderwells & others aren't. Gave up & came in, been one those days. Head casting # is 381184 can't seem to ID. Disassembled & cleaned each lifter, adjusted valves again, runs like a champ & quiet now. Brian
