I know it's been asked but I can't find the thread, so here it is again:
What 5 speed trannys can be used with a 68 250? Easiest bolt up/conversion. I know that I'll have to change the driveshaft (I hate 2 piece shafts anyway, just gives a second spot for pole vaulting), but what else? I do a lot of driving (long range fishin spots) and the mileage increase would be nice.
Secondary question, I'm considering finding an old 327 to rebuild in the garage. Would the 5 spd still bolt up?

327 and your 250 would use the same bellhousing, so if you mount the motor in the stock location it should bolt up the same.

Putting an S-10 5-speed behind a 235 requires playing some games with the clutch, but I think that part would be easier on a 250 or 327. But I've not done it, so I don't know all the details.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...

Go to www.inliners.org Look on the left side...click on "Tech Tips"...then scroll down to "T-5 Tranny Swap" They also have some links on there to this site, and others.

Most likely you'll want to get a T-5 from a Camaro/ Firebird application, because of the better overdrive, gear spacing, and first gear ratio. You'll have to swap another tailshaft onto it. That is unless you don't have a bench seat, or you have room for a shifter that is further back. I'm wanting to do this swap, but I don't have the money or time right now. The only problem seems to be the clutch package, which various people have found ways to solve. Email me if you want to chat, or if you need more info. As far as the 327 goes, it would depend on how beefy you build the engine. If it's a completely stock (really mild) 327 it should hold up to the power. The T-5 trannies aren't that strong. Hope this helps. John
