Gettin' ready to convert my '65 292 to HEI. Anyone know if the '75 ignition systems need a coil or is it built into the cap? I'm ordering my stuff online and just trying to figure out exactly what I'll need.

If it's got the large-diameter cap, the coil mounts inside it. If you're buying new parts, you'll get an empty cap, without a coil. If you're using salvage yard parts, the coil will probably be there. One precaution on this ignotion- - - -early systems had a nasty habit of burning a hole through the rotor, and shorting the secondary voltage to the distributor shaft, resulting in a no-start condition. Replacement rotors had a much thicker center section of the rotor to prevent this problem. An open-circuited plug wire will cause the spark to do funny things, like burn through the insulation in the coil, and hit the 12 volt primary winding with about 50,000 volts, so be sure plugs and wires are in good shape. Also DON'T pull plug wires off with the engine running looking for a miss. It will light you up in an instant! BTW, don't waste your money on "high-output" coils, you've got plenty of voltage with the stock item.

I'm pretty sure '75 was a large base/cap HEI with external coil. '76 was the start of the internal coil HEI. Use either one. I have switched from the internal to an external because I need more room above it for a AC compressor.

Alright, thanks fellas. Not using any bone yard stuff. I barely have enough time to work on the truck much less dig thru the yards. It's all available thru autozone. $90 for the distributor. Not bad and if there's any problem I can drive 5 minutes to the nearest store and swap it out.

1975 did use the external coil. I converted mine over to an external coil, from an internal one. You probably already know, but you'll also need: New wires, cap, rotor, coil, remove the resistor wire or ballast resistor, I also can't remeber if the vacuum advance and ignition module comes with the rebuilt dizzy. If not, you'll need those too. I think that's about it. Good luck. John

It does come with ignition module. As far as vacuum advance, I was planning on putting an adjustable one on. Only problem is, can't find one that says it'll work with 292. Are the 8's the same as the 6's? Anyone running an adjustable vacuum advance on a straight 6?
