I bought brake shoes for my 49 front and rear. Raybestos 141PG. The four shoes in one box had linings longer than the other. As the 49 shoes are the same on both sides of the axle I could always put the longer set on the front and the shorter on the rear. Someone said I should split the difference and put the longer lined shoes on the backing plate facing the front of the truck (front and rear) and someone suggested the longer lined shoes should go on the backing plates facing the rear of the truck. I am easily confused. I think this might apply on bendix brakes where one shoe is longer.

They can in fact be reversed if there is wear on one. Having a box of shoes which is about one inch longer than the other box, both same part number, perhaps I can put the longer shoes entirerly on the front.

I would put the long shoe in front. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

Here is a link to Raybestos counterman training page. http://www.raybestos.com/OnLineTraining/cpt-007.htm The larger shoe will go in the rear position. Hope this clears things up for you!

It shows that 70% of the brakeing is on the front shoe on non-servo brakes which is what huck brakes are. I believe I would want the most braking on the longest shoe. Huck brakes were used on 1/2 tons 1950 on back. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

Have you compared the metal part of the shoes to your old ones? If they are for Bendix brakes, the metal form will be different.

Now if I understand the original post "The four shoes in one box had linings longer than the other." Olblu49 has 2 sets of brake shoes. One set of four is longer then the other set of 4.
If it were me I would put the longer set on the front brakes. As they do most of the braking. I would not mix and match lengths between the boxes.
Good luck

It,s true the linings should be the same length. Old blue you might take that back to the supplyer & check with them. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Two boxes of shoes, 4 shoes with 1 3/4" wide by 11 1/4" long lining and the second set of 4 shoes with linings that are 1 3/4" by 10 1/2" long. Both are from Raybestos p/n 141PG. If I keep them I will put the longer linings on the front wheels. The shoes themself are identical. Now another thing has come up. I want extra friction (FF)linings and the edge code on the shoes should show it in a serial/compound number. These shows show nothing. After more inquiries it was suggested that these may be counterfeit shoes! More research to come.
