I am looking for information? What holds the damper in place besides the taper on a 235 chevy 6 1954?

OUTCAST,

What holds the damper in place? Friction, and our best hopes, (and some here might say, our prayers), I think.

If you search the forum for "harmonic balance", "crank pulley", "crankshaft pulley", and "damper", you will should find discussions on this topic. Some people have described adding a bolt to hold the harmonic balance on - I have never seen this nor done this.

Drilling and taping the crank for a damper bolt is best done by a engine builder or machine shop. With the 59 235 engine and the short water pump I experienced some clearance problems with the stock fan blade as it comes around hitting the new damper bolt. One thing leads to another and in my case finally went with an electric fan in front of the rad. All a damper bolt provides ispeace of mind.

It provides piece of mind until the balancer actually comes loose and the bolt keeps it from hitting the radiator or ruining the engine. Use red loctite on crank snout then drive balancer on with rubber hammer. remove balancer as few times as possible, the interferance fit can wear out.

I agree with 52pu that drilling and tapping a crank snout is best left to a reputable shop, although i didn't follow this advice myself. I did drill and tap the crank on a 58 235 with a hand drill. I got lucky because you want to keep it straight and dead center. the dead center part was easy keeping it straight is not so easy.
