Have a '48 2-ton with a 1954 powerglide 235 engine in it. Truck came with the NO free play in the clutch pedal and lots of squalling noises coming from the bottom end with the engine running and the clutch depressed. Throwout bearing right? Wrong. We replaced it this afternoon, inspected the clutch, greased the release arm pivot point, adjusted the clutch and voila! Same noise.

Sounds like something rubbing on sheet metal, very similar to a problem on another vehicle a couple of years ago when the outer ring of the harmonic balancer slid back into the timing cover.

Noise only appears with engine running and the clutch depressed. Let it up and it goes away.

We're looking for ideas on what to check next, any help, ideas or wild guesses appreciated.

Pilot bushing in the rear of the crankshaft or POSSIBLY the front bearing in the tranny
What does the oil look like in the tranny?

There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

I heard a similar noise in a '46 1/2 ton ,, turned out it was the anti rattle springs in the pressure plate had lost their tension .
Perhaps it was more of a rattling noise...... only happened when clutch was fully depressed .

Well, I was in a hurry so I didn't acutally LOOK at the pilot bushing, just put a little grease on the end of the transmission shaft so that's a possibility.

I also just read in the service manual how to replace the clutch springs that cause the rattle and that's a possibility to.

It's wet, windy and cool here today so me getting out there and crawling under it is a possiblity, but not a probability

Thanks for the input. I'll keep you posted on what we find when it dries out and warms up.
