250 6 cylinder; in salvage yard out of vehicle.

non-integral head; engine completely intact but uncovered; by visual inspection and gut feeling i'd say it's never been rebuilt.

has factory p/s pump and lines attached and factory a/c compressor; owner wants $200.

feedback?

Water down carb throat? Valves open, let in water, one or two rusty cyl for sure? does it turn? P/steer and AC parts good find. Seems high to me, but I haven't bought a junk engine for some time, maybe that's what they get now adays. I wouldn't go more than $100 myself, depends on how "bad" you wanted it! I always pay way too much for the stuff I want bad, think they can "read" my face or something. Course, when it's MY stuff,it's "junk" and not worth anything to the next guy!

GL I think I went about it the wrong way. I asked him about the p/s pump and accessories and he said 50 bucks; that's when I asked him about the entire unit. I should have worked it the exact opposite (engine price first, then p/s).

I think I might be able to work him to $175.

Valve cover is on and sealed tight. So there's probably been minimal water in the cylinders. the 1 bbl has the original carb cover assembly fully intact, with the opening tilting slightly downhill. So I doubt if much water has entered the head that way.

Would it be best to pop the oil pan off and see what's in it? Because wouldn't any water in the cyl. eventually make it's way to the pan?

Does a rusted cylinder (or cylinders) mean a trashed engine necessarily?

I've had success cleaning up rusted cylinders on tractors. You can see the damage more clearly from the top, but it is going to look much worse initially than it really is since there is going to be slop on top of the pistons.

From the bottom you'll see some rust on the rods if there is much water present. If you see rust on the lower part of the cylinder, work it with some WD40 to see if it cleans. If not the top part of the cylinder is going to be very bad.

If there is water in the pan, and you are rebuilding away, use it as a bargaining point.

But the real mechanics will know if you can bore the cylinders to get past pitting.

I just picked up a complete 292 fan to flywheel, air cleaner to oil pan plus alternator, starter, motor mounts for $100. Has 100k miles on it, clean oil in the oil pan, stored in someone garage since removed from vehicle.

You should be able to try to turn it over to see if it is locked up or not. $200 seems high to me if it is potentially just a core. If any water in the oil, price drops in half.

i heard someone on the local swap swap trying to give away a 292 sat,started to call but i want a v8.

Only way I'd buy it any price was if the owner agreed in writing to take it back after the head was pulled. Bought one 235 engine that was supposedly covered at all times--HA! Had rained in carburetor--Numbers 3 & 4 pistons had to be removed with a sledge hammer--then all cylinders bored .060"--complete overhaul--many bucks--could have bought a completly rebuilt long block for what I ended up in it. Believe it or not, there are some people out there that will flat out LIE!
