#24917 07/01/2003 5:42 PM | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 454 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 454 | I've currently got a parts wanted ad in the Swap Meet for brake drums for my 1953 3/4 ton Chevy pickup. I know that the same drum was used from 1953 to 1959.
I have now been told that the same drum was used on 1960-1970 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive pickups. Does anyone know that for sure? Anyone got a picture of one online? If I can confirm this information, it will hopefully make it more likely that I will be able to find the parts I am looking for.

I know repros are available from many of the standard vendors, and that will be the route I take if I can't find either NOS or excellent quality used. I know that for brake parts, the Chinese repros need to meet DOT specifications, but I just don't think they will be as good of quality as the originals. I keep having this image of Chairman Mao's "Great Leap Forward" in the 50s and all of these folks in China building small steel smelters in their backyards.

#24920 07/02/2003 7:19 AM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | Not sure when they changed in the 60`s but the drums were changed to an inboard design which made the removal of the drum and hub as an assembly a requirement.
The earlier style had three screws which could be removed and the drum could be removed with the hub still left in place on the axle assembly.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

I was going to update my 37 with 51-up brakes and checked with autozone and they could get everything to rebuild and even had a drum in stock,if they can get parts for a half ton they probably can for 3/4 tons too. The drums are the same on the front and back of a half ton,the 3/4 tons might be the same also. | | |

I mainly bought it for the pumpkin. It was hanging on the truck in the crusher pile at a salvage yard. Luckily, i got the rear before it was crushed.  | | |

Have a '66 date stamped on the ring gear so someone must have replaced the pumpkin. Open diff. It has larger brake drums than a '66 rear end I saved the drums & hubs from. I think I can get my hands on a 4.11 pumpkin if that is what you need. | | |
