It was flush against the crank gear at the back but there was about 5/8 inch distance between the end of the crank and the step up in the inside of the balancer. I didn't take it off but I am assuming the damper should go on far enough to bottom against the crank and the raised portion of the inside of the balancer.
I have always seen crank gears with two threaded holes like the balancer and the cam gear but this crank gear has no holes on the side facing out.
Could my machine shop have installed the crank gear on the wrong side?
I know this sounds stupid to all you guys that do your own engine rebuilding but I'm lost.

The balancer doesn't necessarily match with the end of the crank, but the loose fit worries me. Did you have the balancer rebuilt? If not, I would get it done. Also, did the mechanic drill and thread the crank snout for a bolt? Useful for retaining a balancer.
