I put a new clutch, pressure plate T/O bearing and pilot bearing in the SM420 on my '66 C-10. Problem is, now at idle the clutch fork is chattering. I've adjusted the clutch travel per the manual and still it rattles. I'm thinking it's the pivot ball/fork/pressure plate combo. I've read somewhere that the ball and fork are set up for a particular T/O bearing width. Is this the problem or are the ball and fork worn out? I'm sure the tranny has to come back out, but I only want to do it once, since it's hard to bench press a SM420 while shooting the bolts. Thanks

You might need to do an alignment on them to get them all in plumb to stop it from chattering.

I used an old seatbelt to hold mine all together in line while I set it all up and then the seatbelt just slipped out nice and easy after it was together. Worked mint.

Is the fork loose at the pivot ball? perhaps the spring retainer is broken? I'm assuming thats how it installs, but I'm not that familiar with that vintage of truck.

Meathead - could you give me a little more detail.

Profitt - I can see from the outside that the fork is whats chattering. It's rattling against the throwout bearing. The retainer spring is in place and seems to be hooked up correctly, though the fork boot at the bellhousing isn't installed. Not sure what I was thinking.

I think I'll just pull the tranny and see what I see. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
