Just wondering if anyone else has ever done this...... I have two 3rd row seats for my suburban project. I am thinking about "sectioning" the frame on one of them to create the shorter 2nd row seat.

I don't see why it wouldn't work-they are made like bus seats, GM sure didn't spend the money on R&D they do now. I would insert a smaller piece of pipe inide the tubing where it is spliced together, then weld away. I have been pondering using a driver's seat with the tracks removed for the second row, but for now I just want to get it moving. Brian

Wait a minute here guys!.....Weeds, I have a rebuilt and uphostered 3rd seat and would love to trade for the shorter 2nd seat so I can get by into the carge bay without hopping over the wider 3rd seat...I am thinking the 3rd seat is the one most people are looking for. Is that right?

Stingray 3rd row seats are rare as they were discarded for the cargo space. I'm sure you can swap with someone for a second and maybe put $$ in your pocket as well. What year is your burb?

My '62 Suburban came with two sets of seat mount recesses in the floor: One that fits the narrower 2nd row seat, and one that fits the wide 3rd row seat, allowing me to but a wide seat in the second seat position, and no seat in the very back, so I've got 6-place seating and cargo area.
The guy I bought the truck from had a '60 with the same set-up, but he never realized it and sold me the third row frame for $100 when I bought the truck. Two minutes after I explained to him what I was going to do, he wanted to buy the frame back. Bwahahahaha!

My Suburban also has solid, 1-pc windows in the 3rd position, sliders only in the middle row.

Maybe some of you guys with a third row seat, that only want two rows, and simply move the mounts. A router would make short work of cutting the recesses.

Are you sure that is an orginal 47-54 2nd sub seat, I have sevral original seconds that have a slightly different bottoms.

I am very interested if anyone wants to trade a 2nd seat for an original third seat (47-53 suburban)

Seats are the most rare item in a Suburban, I'd like to see them traded back and forth before anyone cuts one up to try and make another. In addition to the frames being different, the wooden bits inside the seats are different too. (and don't forget the "elevator" bolts to hold them to the floor)

Thanks for all of the responses, I've been out of town on business, just got back tonight. My 'Burb is a '62 G.M.C. I'd be more than interested in trading seats if someone wanted to. It'd be much, much easier.

Weeds, I am 95% sure that the 60's burb seats are different than a 49 burb seat. The Seat you are referring to for a 49 were common from 47-59. I have a set from both the first series (47-54) and a set from the second series 55-59 and they look the same.

Stingray...if your second GMC burb seat sits in a track that runs the length of the cargo bay ( is adjustable with a kind of butterfly bolt that turns and locks into the track when the nut is tightened on top of the tube rails ) then I am interested. My third seat is bolted into the second seat postision so as to give me more room in the cargo bay. Problem is getting over it from the front. Where are you located?

Dthela....do yours bolt into a track making them adjustable or do they have a fixed mount somthing like the ones John posted pics on above?

EB, I think the 60-62 GMC burbs have the same setup as the Chevy's. Keyhole shaped holes in the floor for carriage bolts to slip into. 63 was the 1st year for the tracks. Brian

Here's a pic of the second seat that allows a passenger access to the most rear area on my former '60 Chevy Burb that went to Tacoma, Wa area today but the new owner didn't want the 3 rows of seat so I'm stuck with them without a Burb to put them in. Hello "Hen's Teeth" :rolleyes: .

Thanks Brian.....I got it now....63 to 66 GMC has the tracks and the second and third seats are flexible and mount anywhere on the track including facing backwards.

Anyone near Ontario Canada with the second seat from a 63 to 66 that mounts in the track?

Tim I wish I had taken photos. I dropped by the upholster one day when he was half way through. Each seat cushion had a black painted plywood panel as a base for the foam and canvas to staple into. If I remember correctly these had a few holes drilled through at regular intervals. (probably to allow air to pass through?)

Weeds, the Chevy's and GMC'S use the same seats, bolts and mounting system in the 47/55. I am pretty sure they are the same in the earlier trucks too.

si47gmc, do you want to sell a set of 2nd and third seats, i could use them for my 55 chevy panel

John who recovered your seats and were you pleased with there work, i am not too far from you and i need to get all my seats done in the next couple of months. what is a fair price in plain vinyl with a french seam.
