old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 564 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 564 | It looks like I'm going to be converting my barn doors to a tail gate and lift gate; for day-to-day stuff, the barn doors are nice, but I run a swap meet 12 times a year, and will be using the truck to pull a race car; the doors frequently stay open, and I can't stand the wind blowing them shut or trying to hyper-extend them anymore, so going with the 'gates.
The donor was a junk yard GMC; I haven't picked the pieces up yet, but the guy who got them for me sent pics, and the license plate recess/light housing has the GMC emblem cast into it.
What does the Chevy tailgate have for the light housing? And does this piece unbolt so I can swap them out? (My truck is a Chevy, and I want to keep it that way)

IMO the barn doors are more practical than a clam shell in getting stuff out of the back of the Burb. You won't have to climb in  . | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 335 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 335 | hmmmmmm BRAVO seon...good point...not to mention that if you drive away with the gate down and cut the wheel hard you'll do a $1000 worth of damage.....Why didnt you post thiis a month ago LO)LOLOLOLL | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 564 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 564 | I've thought about that issue with the tail gate and the trailer jack. A LOT. My trailer has a swing-up jack, but If I add a tongue box, I'll have to change that.
I'm not sure that barn doors would clear it either, as they swing open.
Hey DT...How much for the tail gate?

In the works 2006 GEN III 6.0 /4L80E/ 205 New process,A/C and power brakes .

I just posted on how to replace weather striping and doorstops to get rid of the loose and sloppy rattles in the clamshell...oh well I like the gate and will stay with it. BTW what about that middle short seat I need for my 63 burb?

I set it in the back wrong, and every time I would go around a corner, it would rotate, then clunk back, beating the hell out of my inner fender and floor. I pulled over, opened the doors, and grabbed on to the rear end to set it in the truck diagonally so it wouldn't slide forward or roll on corners. With a drum in front of me, I had both hands craddling it, and my elbows bent out like a couple of chicken wings while I'm grunting the rear end up and moving it, and then WHAM! The left side door swung shut, whacking me right on the end of the elbow, with the nice angular door latch release handle making the sharp, pointed contact. My son learned a couple new words right then.
Yeah, it's easier to open the doors and set or retreive things, but I've had it with the doors swinghing shut.

Or does the wind blow them past the stops? Brian | | |
