Back in the dark ages, my friend's dad had a Chevrolet Suburban. It was the style with no windows, and I believe the entire rear door swung open on hinges. He always referred to it as the "crummy".

Many of the timber fallers in this area are provided rides into the woods to work every morning...they ride in the company "crummy"

Is this local slang...how come I have never seen this name mentioned in this forum. As Hot Rod Lincoln once said, "inquiring minds want to know".

It's only been the timber industry in the west where I've heard it used. Probably due to the fact that the timber industry was out here in the west doing there deal when motorized vehicles came on the scene. I'm sure the crew rig was the "crummiest" truck they had around that a passenger box could be bolted on.......
Any other ideas??

crummy is standard slang for a crew vehicle in the forest industry, prolly used round the world - never heard it here because maybe there's no loggers aboard, or maybe nobody who wants to refer to their beloved ol truck as "crummy"

the burb w/o windows is a panel, tho if it had a single rear door then it'd be a sedan delivery, the car framed version [window-less station wagon]

my 57 panel was a logging camp ambulance in it's first life, and was really the same thing it's forest company owner used for crummies - a panel w/ a bench seat down both sides, room in the middle for the saws and such

My dad had a shop in Springfield, Oregon and regularly serviced Weyerhauser's fleet of crummies. This is most definitely a slang term used by loggers, and forestry types.

i can agree with this definition. the loggers that i have known all drive or ride in crummies when they go to work. it seems to transcend vehicle style or brand. it is an interesting logger slang word.

Spot on for what a crummy is, the only time i've ever heard the name used, is out west. When i dabbled in logging in 'bama, it was called the crewbus.
