I had my 4 speed in my 1948 Chev 1/2T rebuilt over 5000 miles ago, and today driving home from work I put in the clutch to down-shift into third, and I could not get the trans to shift out of 4th. When trying to move the lever, I got a "synchro" noise that you would normally get down-shifting, but I could not get it to come out of 4th gear. I limped it home in fourth with a little clutch slipping action. It now sits in the driveway awaiting me to investigate.
Are there any other ideas before I tear the interior out, and pull the floor pan and trans top to investigate?

| | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 235 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 235 | Garry I don't know if this will help mate but on my 41 with the four speed, I can't get it in to 3rd or 4th on the upshift or into 3rd from 4th on the downshift unless I slightly lift the reverse lock lever while changing gear. The spring on the lever must be either weak or missing. Like I said I don't know if it will help but might at least be worth a try.

It's not an uncommon situation, which usually happens when someone assembles the synchronizer slightly wrong. I hope it won't take a full teardown to fix it, but it's a possibility.
