Sitting in traffic one can’t help but notice the smell that emanates from the tail pipe of me old bolt or the looks from the poor people that are parked close by. Back at home; I keep her in the garage that is attached to the kitchen. But after we get back from our exercise, I’d better darn well keep that kitchen door closed for a couple of hours or the stink will drive my “big old wife” right out of the house.
The new cars are so clean burning that I guess we forget just how bad the cars were back in the old days before pollution controls. The smell of partly burned gas laying in an exhaust pipe is really quite obnoxious.
She is freshly tuned up, nice clean burning plugs and the Rochester ‘B’ isn’t even leaking fuel. Timing is right on, maybe just a few degrees advanced so I don’t think there is too much more to do that will reduce the emissions.
Speaking of emissions, has anyone had to run their stock bolt through a testing station??

Be glad your not driving a diesel Denny; your "big old wife" would have you sleeping on the couch.

The smells don't bother me! grin Besides, ever get around a late model car that's not running right or has a fouled out cat? Nasty. Smells like a whole truckload of rotten eggs! :p

O.K. maybe I'm sorta wierd. I like the smell of burning gas in old engines. My 4 year old son(Mac) does too. I caught him trying to sniff the exhaust very near the tailpipe last year. I asked him why he was doing it and he said it smelled good. I told him the fumes could make him crazy. I think I was too late.

The crankcase vapors smell way worse than what comes out the tailpipe. Maybe a PCV would help.

Hey J, where would I find that PCV thing on my '50, 3604???
That's probably where most of the schtink is comming from, blow by and all you know.
I think it's already too late for you to Mac!
Yeah Bill, that's bad but not as much of a problem as it was a few years ago when they first came out with the converters.
Hey Big, how did you know I sleep on the couch?

these old trucks didn't have any pvc valves (or positive crankcase ventilation valve) they just have that pipe that comes out near the distributor and turns down and points toward the ground. newer cars have a pvc valve, usually mounted on the valve cover (at least i think so) and when the pressure gets to a certain point, it opens up and sends the fumes to the intake manifold via a solid or rubber vac line and the fumes get burnt with the new fuel instead being put into the air. that why its illegal to have breathers on newer model car because of environmental regulations.

You could actually route crankcase fumes up into your air cleaner, but a 216 has the crankcase ventet to the atmosphere at two points: The draft tube, as Drummin points out, and the valve cover has 3 louvers it it. The way it's supposed to work is, the engine draws air in one and lets it out the other. What happens in mine, since the engine is far between overhauls and blows by some, is that it slobbers a bit. And so will you, when you get this old! :/

Awwww come on Chris and Mark, surely you know I had my tongue in my cheek when I said that? Most of you guys that have read me know that I'm a PURIST and I taint gonna put no PVC,CVP,VPC, wait a minuet I’ll get this right, PCV thingie on the sweet old gal. I’z just makin’ a comment on how stinky she was in comparison, I mean me and the old hound dog is stinky to and I taint gone hang nothin’ extra on her or me! Actually the engine is in real nice shape, 130 across the board, new valve job last spring and she don’t really smoke at all. Maybe I should check to see if there’s any oil in her, ya think?

Funny, but my daughter and I took a long ride in the bolt Saturday afternoon looking at houses and we were talking about this very thing. She asked how I was gonna pass a smog test and I said I thought I was grandfathered out of them. Then she really made me feel bad by reminding me of what I was doing to the enviroment and that I would be passing this all down to my grandchildren. Ya see, my “big old wife” and I are white but my daughter is green.
Just havin’ some fun guys!

Denny,
Just find yourself a late 40's, early 50's Chevy forward control truck,(those UPS looking trucks). They came with a factory PCV setup on the draft tube.

Well, by godly you guys weren't kiddin were ya! r.p.o. 217, pn. 33707900, all models. Ya learn somethin new every day, even at my age. The only problem is that this is dated 06/01/1953. Might work on yours Beav but wouldn't look right on mine. Not to say that it wouldn't make her a little more sociable to be around, but it's not for me and old stinky.
