I resently had my three speed trans overhauled, however my truck a 1953 chevy half ton is jumping out of third gear. the truck can be going slow or fast. The forks have been replaced along with the slider gear and cluster gear. The shift arms have been ajusted and new rubber bushings install, what could be the problem?

The problem could be in the cover. The spring
behind the detent may be broke or weak. I have
stretched them out before. Check the grooves
for wear also. If it,s been o-hauled I take it
the bearings are good. smile

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

The problem could be in the pilot bearing , or the needle rollers or the rear thrust , or a combination of them all .

I really believe the jumping out of 3rd gear is caused by a combination of things moreso than by one particular problem.

In rebuilding my 3 spd, I was able to find some new gears to install, but also had to try alot of "good" used parts before it was right. Good detents and forks help, but if the inner shaft doesn't mate up perfectly inside the drum gear, it still seemed to jump out. Lots of slop in the bearings and gears ain't good either. The whole thing needs to be as tight as possible.

If the column linkage isnt adjusted correctly, the trans wont go completely into 3rd. Make sure the shift arms are correct on the splined shift forks shaft, the shift rods are adjusted properly, and the shifter box and shift bushings on column aren't worn out.

and thats no bull shift wink
