For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 69 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 69 | Got a leaking pinion seal in an original 57 rear end. I changed the seal, and when it was apart I noticed much pitting in the yoke surfaces. I changed the seal but is still slinging oil. Many years ago, I made oil field salt water pumps last a bit longer by JB Welding similiar surfaces and sanding it smooth to fill the pits. Reckon this might hold up to oil and to this application for a while? Thoughts? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 | Welcome to the bolt! The JBWeld sounds like a plan to me. I've heard of guys using it to repair engine block cracks, so it should do the trick for you. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | I think it souns like a real good idea to. It,s a good idea to put a little RTV on the yoke splines before putting it on. Are the bearings O.K.? Loose brgs. can cause a leak also. The seals usually don,t leak that soon from a rough yoke surface, although it certainly shortens the life. You might check the parts store & see if a speedy sleeve is available for that. That is the best way to go. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I used a spedi-sleeve to fix mine that had huge grooves in it. It worked great!
A local parts house should be able to help you choose the right one. (if not I think that I saved the old box from the one I used - I can try to find it).
A tip on installing it: Boil your sleeve in water and stick your yoke in a bucket of ice water - this way when you install the sleeve it slides on pretty easily. Once they equalize in temp it is on to stay!
Good luck.

Rustednuts, pics? Are you kidding? With my computer skills? hehe I'll work on that. This is the start of what looks like will be a long project. Work until the money is gone. Save more. Work. Save. You get the picture. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Thats the problem, we didnt get any pictures! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 247 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 247 | I have used speedi sleeves for years. It will definitely give the seal a good surface to ride on, and is a lot cheeper then a new yoke. I put one in my wrecker last year, and it hasn't leaked since. Good luck, and welcome to the bolt.
