I've seen it done, but there's issues with the steering shaft having to have some way to flex and telescope with the suspesnsion motion, plus the extra weight on the axle itself. Rack and pinion systems are intended to solid mounted to the frame, ot the suspension components. That's why the oems never used it on a straight axle.
