would it be possible to set up a rack and pinon steering set up on a stock 58 tf axel?? a simple setup, not something that would require an engineer to layout. Mike Bourg

No. Rack and pinion is best left for IFS. I've seen it done, but there's issues with the steering shaft having to have some way to flex and telescope with the suspesnsion motion, plus the extra weight on the axle itself. Rack and pinion systems are intended to solid mounted to the frame, ot the suspension components. That's why the oems never used it on a straight axle.
