Here is what many do if they keep the factory column. Take the top cover off the shifter transmission (box at bottom of column), wipe grease off, have someone hold the shifter handle up in the neutral slot like they were going to put it in low or reverse, dot with weld to hold it there. Now put the trans in park, hold the shift lever where you want it to be when in park and measure the distance from the hole in the shifter lever to the hole in the lever on the transmission. Make a shifter rod to fit. Some people just tie the 2nd and high lever off to one side which works but isn't as tidy looking. Here is a photo of this setup including a home made neutral safety switch and bracket that lets it start in park only. Some rig an indicator up but after driving very little you will feel the distance from park to drive and just do it without thinking. http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/coilover/
