I previously posted my frustrations with getting a windshield installed in our '54. Here is the original discussion. . Well, hooray! This weekend my dad and I got the windshield installed. It looks great, and we can finally get our plates for it (not registering as a historic vehicle).

So thanks for the advice that you all contributed. The only embarrassing installation note is that we did use water-based personal lubricant. My wife and mother were quite amused.

We have a car show next weekend (our first) and this windshield was the last thing we needed to do in order to get plates so we could drive in the cruise. I'm interested to see what other car nuts think of our old beater--she's got some patina, but she's road worthy!

Hi Greg, Just went through an ordeal with my 54....had a local "professional" glass company supply the windshield and do the installation. The guy seemed knowledgable...had the glass in in less than 15 minutes...snapped the deluxe trim in and was off like a rocket. It looked okay but the first time I hit a HEAVY rain it was a flood in the cab. Seems that the 54 windshield requires sealing and that the trim goes on before the glass is set. The dufus had the gasket 90 degrees out of phase and no sealer.

I contacted them and after a short conversation took it to another company who spent 3 hours with an experienced crew to get it in correctly. Obviously, the charge was significant along with a new gasket. So if you have a 54 find out beforehand, if the installers know how to do it and give it a water test before money is exchanged. I hope this saves someone else a lot of frustration...and money!

Dave-- sorry to hear about your situation. This is one of the reasons why my Dad and I were determined to install this thing ourselves. We haven't put the sealer on yet because we want to give the "lubricant" a few days to dry in there before putting on the silicone or whatever that stuff is. I hope we are dry on rainy days, so we'll see.

BTW, I enjoyed looking through your progress pictures online. It looks really great, and I wish I lived closer to Florida so I could come check out another 54.

Now that this windshield business is out of the way, my Dad and I can get on with more mechanical-type things...
