Cant seem to figure out which moter I have in my 66 Chevy C10. Its a V6 but have no clue if is a 230 or the 292.

VIN is C1446S159860

If it's a V6, it won't be either one. If it's the original engine, it would most likely be a 305. The only problem with that is that it would actually be a GMC, not a Chevy. Possibly a PO swapped out some sheetmetal somwhere during the trucks life? Can you post some pix? That might help ID it a little better.

I think many people think all engines are supposed to have a V preceding the number of cylinders, whether or not they actually are in a V configuration. Look at all the Ebay entries where they say it is a Vx and it is an inline engine.

The 230 and the 292 are inline engines... as longbox55 mentions.

GMC: 1960 - 1963 Big Block 305 V-6 only
GMC: 1964 - 1966 Big Block 305 V-6, (351 V-6 -1966 only) - or option of the inline Chevrolet six cylinder engines

I have heard of the V6 being used in a Chevy, but only in the heavier truck (1 1/2 ton? up). Or at least the Chilton manual list them.
