on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 2 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 2 | Well about a year ago my wifes father passed away and I was given his old 50's chevy truck he had sitting out back. I am trying to figure out what year the truck is as I can't find the ID plate anywhere on it so maybe some of you guys could help. Here are some pics that I could get around the weeds. pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 Thanks! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 | No vent windows puts it into the '47 - '50 range. The driver's side vent may be a further clue but I can't remember. I'm sure an expert will coment on this later. You can decode the engine numbers to tell what year the engine is. Copy stamped numbers on the pad just behind the distributor then go to http://chevy.tocmp.com/models/engine.htm | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,896 Socket Breaker | | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,896 | | | | | | Joined: Oct 2000 Posts: 804 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2000 Posts: 804 | Does it have a gas tank under the bed? Does it have tube or knee action shocks?
It is a 49ish being it has the left side cowl vent. But I would check on the gas tank, that would be give away of a 1947-48.

Always get a 2nd opinion, especially if I am the source of the 1st opinion.

I'm no AD expert, but certainly THOSE lean to a particular year, right? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 640 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 640 | If the gas tank is under the bed (the filler pipe comes through the bed side), it's a '47 or '48. The side plates on the hood will have "Thriftmaster" under Chevrolet as well.
I'll do some more checking and give you some more clues.
It'll be interesting to see what those inside door handles on the grille actually do. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 640 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 640 | If there's an ID plate, it'll be on the pillar inside the driver's door. If it's a '47, the ID will start with an "E". '48's start with "F". '49's start with "G". '50's start with "H".
Okay, more clues: If it has a floor shifter, and it's three speed, it's a '47. If it's a three on the tree (steering column), it's a '48 or early '49. However, if it's a '49 or later, the gas filler will be sticking out of the cab, not the bed. '50's have tubular shocks instead of the knee action shocks of the '47-49's. 1950 was also the last year with a driver side cowl vent, so your truck is definitely a '47-'50.
Let us know what you determine, okay? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 843 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 843 | Those things in the grill look like marker lights for a boat.Could they be add-on turn signal's? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 72 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 72 | The main difference between a '47 and a '48 that I'm aware of is the '47 will have a hand lever parking brake and the '48 a foot pedal for the parking brake. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 272 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 272 | Was there a reverse lockout lever on the 47.5?

Here are a few extra pics as well: Pic 4 Pic 5 Thanks, Mike | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 640 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 640 | Yes, it appears to be a '47. The valve cover is from a later model, or someone handy added the breather cap to the original valve cover.
What are your plans for the truck? | | |
