Well about a year ago my wifes father passed away and I was given his old 50's chevy truck he had sitting out back.

I am trying to figure out what year the truck is as I can't find the ID plate anywhere on it so maybe some of you guys could help.

Here are some pics that I could get around the weeds.

No vent windows puts it into the '47 - '50 range. The driver's side vent may be a further clue but I can't remember. I'm sure an expert will coment on this later.

You can decode the engine numbers to tell what year the engine is. Copy stamped numbers on the pad just behind the distributor then go to

Does it have a gas tank under the bed? Does it have tube or knee action shocks?

It is a 49ish being it has the left side cowl vent. But I would check on the gas tank, that would be give away of a 1947-48.

If that hood side decal reads Chevrolet (old eyes), it is either a 1949 or 1950

What about those chrome handles on the outboard grill bars? I'm no AD expert, but certainly THOSE lean to a particular year, right? grin

If the gas tank is under the bed (the filler pipe comes through the bed side), it's a '47 or '48. The side plates on the hood will have "Thriftmaster" under Chevrolet as well.

I'll do some more checking and give you some more clues.

It'll be interesting to see what those inside door handles on the grille actually do.

If there's an ID plate, it'll be on the pillar inside the driver's door. If it's a '47, the ID will start with an "E". '48's start with "F". '49's start with "G". '50's start with "H".

Okay, more clues: If it has a floor shifter, and it's three speed, it's a '47. If it's a three on the tree (steering column), it's a '48 or early '49. However, if it's a '49 or later, the gas filler will be sticking out of the cab, not the bed. '50's have tubular shocks instead of the knee action shocks of the '47-49's. 1950 was also the last year with a driver side cowl vent, so your truck is definitely a '47-'50.

Let us know what you determine, okay?

Those things in the grill look like marker lights for a boat.Could they be add-on turn signal's?

The main difference between a '47 and a '48 that I'm aware of is the '47 will have a hand lever parking brake and the '48 a foot pedal for the parking brake.

Was there a reverse lockout lever on the 47.5?

Thanks, from what research I have done as well it seems to be a 47 model which is great since I thought it was a 50's model for the longest lol.

Here are a few extra pics as well:

Yes, it appears to be a '47. The valve cover is from a later model, or someone handy added the breather cap to the original valve cover.

What are your plans for the truck?
