For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 11 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 11 | When I purchased my truck, I didn't know it had 2 different wheel lug set ups on it. The fronts are the original 8 lug 3/4 ton, and the rears are 1/2 ton 5 lug as the rear differential has been changed. Now I will need to make a change. I think the best option would be to change out the complete front spindle and brake set up to match the rear bolt pattern. What do you think? Is there a huge difference in the 1/2 and 3/4 ton front ends? What will I all need to complete this? I really don't want to go to disc brakes at this time as I for sure want to use stock 1964 rims and hub caps. Does anyone have all these parts? Please click to see webshots of the front and rear. I forgot to add that the truck does have power brakes. Thanks. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Just my own opinion here, I'd find an 8 lug rear to put back into it, perhaps a later 14 bolt from a '73-'87. Better chance of getting a 3.73 or 4.10 gear that way. You might be able to swap out the spindles, the upper balljoint can be changed to the 1/2 ton part for sure. I'm not to certain about the lower. The book shows a different part #, might be a larger part than 1/2 ton. You might have to swap to a 1/2 ton lower control arm to do the conversion. Either way, you're going to have to get matching rims.

You could match the rear with a Mustang II front suspension. That would improve your steering and suspension. I'm certain others will drop by with their 2 cents. What ever you do I know you will have fun.

You can't just change out the spindles and brake stuff. You'd have to change out the A arms and ball joints. To match a 5 lug, I think you'd be looking at disc brakes. And using a stock '64 rim would require 6 lug (or 8 for C20). Save yourself a lot of time and hassle and pick up a newer 8 lug rear. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | If it were me, I would install a-arms/spindles/etc from a 71-up C10 on the front & have 5 lug all around & disc brakes, 1/2 ton stuff. Use 71-up 5 lug wheels & 64 hubcaps, no one would know. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 11 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 11 | Thank you guys. I am going to take the next few days and see what I can find around Las Vegas for a newer 1/2 ton truck for parts. I also am looking to find a power steering set-up. I had forgotten how it was when we didn't have all the modern conveniences. http://community.webshots.com/user/2X1964 | | |
