I LOVE factory black steel wheels on a vintage truck. Next best thing is a set of wheels painted black. Your truck looks really good to me.

| | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 | Because when you disassembled them for repair or replacement, and failed to properly cage them when you aired the tire up again, sometimes they'd explode, decapitating the tire guy and giving his wife a social function to attend. Here's a better look at the front wheel: [img]http://thumb11.webshots.net/t/52/452/5/7/74/2835507740096215731EDCLJS_th.jpg[/img] Chrome centre caps and wheelnuts. I wanted to see what they'd look like with black rims. Polished alloy on that truck would look wrong. I think, now, that she has to go to work for a bit and acquire the proper patina to look right. Oh, uh, 1958GMCnut, Dave, now I know where the last part of your handle comes from. Those are wire brush marks, mostly, and will disappear after a few miles. I have a brush thing for my angle grinder. Maybe next time I'll pick a slower machine to clean the metal.

I'm running 8R 19.5 radials. My wheels have the clips, for the original hubcaps. I like the original look better. Just my opinion. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 | Well, I'd have kept the split rims; Got enough experience with them that I'm not scared of working on them, even on the side of the road - you can use chains to wrap them instead of a cage - but I couldn't find decent tires for them, except for Chinese bias-ply tires of unknown quality, and at vast expense. I posted a thread about it a long time ago without satisfactory result. I found these used rims and locally remanufactured steel radial tires for less money than I'd have spent on the offshore things, and got the same tread height with far superior tires and lighter, stronger rims. I am well pleased. One day I might attach clips so I can mount hubcaps, but for the moment I'll forgo such frippery and just pack on the freight. NOW he tells me!
