I never seen one of those before. In both my vehicles the insurance hard wrapped around the steering column and tied in place with wire. Good look at finding one though.

48,

I think this is what you're talking about.

Registration Holder

I would suggest checking E-Bay. You might have to wait a bit for a nice one, but one is bound to turn up.

It was a registration holder. Until the 1970s or so, you were required, in many states, to have your registration displayed so it could be read from outside the vehicle. That law was changed for security reasons. The small insurance cards are a relatively new thing.

Doesn't look like it would be to hard to replicate, I'm supprised Chin isn't crankin them out.
I remember seeing them back in the day, I always thought little old ladies bought them so they would be able to find their cars in the A&P's parking lot.
I don't believe they were required here in Illinois, atleast I din't know about it, so in what states were they manditory?? Wanta bet CA was one of them!

I just took a crusty one off my 57 it was plastic trying to look like leather with a little clear plastic window and two springs that held it to the column. I would find someone that dose leather tooling to make me one.

I remember seeing those on Perry Mason. Never seen one used here in Texas though. Even though you are supposed to have your registration receipt in your car along with your insurance card. Being a cop, if I was to ask everyone I stopped for it, I would be writing citations all through my watch. :blat: It's not worth the trouble to even ask for them. No one carries it. Except me of course!!! grin

Frank cool

those holders were common as flies once, alla cars in AZ had'em in the 50's/60's, but paranoia strikes deep grin

and Frank - if you get stopped here in BC and can't produce the reg and ins papers, you'll be walkin home, or ridin to the station in the back seat

Well, lookin at the photo there, if there was interest in them I could hammer out a couple dozen in a weekend. Just need rough dimensions and I have most of the materials here, just need some springs. I'm pretty sure I can get those at Ace tho.

I can make em out of naugahyde (several colors on hand), or leather depending.

Anyone interested?

ha!! was lookin in a Ford pickup/camper that a friend put here to sell, from father-in-laws estate - it had the "newer" style reg holder in the glovebox, one that clips on the sunvisor - might be the better one to repro, 4" x 5" with a border around the window of ½" .... I think the ones on the column were the same size

Got one on my '49 GMC column. Tried to upload a photo but is taking too long. Anyway, spring held like the Ebay link. Do the Ebay search and you'll score one at some point. Mine was NOS and never installed. In fact, a long time ago someone was selling a counter placard that vendors used to put these on with about 12 of them on it still. I bid on it but got outbid. Probably could have made some $ if I had bid higher.

Had one of those on my '46 2 ton.. all falling apart from 60 years worth of rattling around the steering column and sun exposure.

Ok, ya got my "DO-IT-YOURSELF" juices goin, so maybe I can find an ansewer from one of "yawl". Naugahide, nix, but thin leather grained cardboard would work. Mylar I got, Grommets I got, Springs I got, Sewing machine I got, now where do I find the leather grained cardboard?????

I like these! I'd be interested in getting a new one. I don't think an old one would be in one piece for long.

Denny, what about a cardboard glovebox liner? That is some pretty sturdy stuff, and has an automotive-style grain/color.

The marine grade naugahyde is some tough stuff, dont write it off too early! :p
I have one of the visor clip type from my truck, it's in pretty sad shape tho. I think you can still buy those here & there.

The leatherette cardstock can be found here & there, art supply store would be my 1st guess.

I have one off of my 48 GMC. The plastic cracked out of it and one of the springs is stretched out. It actually still had the reg papers in it from the 50's. I plan on framing it and hanging it in my garage.

I need some WD-40 and a breaker bar!
