Well heres a link to soe pictures of the old beast. Last night I got it going again kinda that is. Today I will check the points and plugs and add some seafoam to the crank case and gas tank. She ran but ran kinda rough. I think its a combination of posibbily bad wires, plugs, points. Also it had a stuck valve which colud be a big contibutor. I will check this out later today. Its probably time for a rebuild but we'll try to run it for a bit anyway.

First off don't run the old rig off old gas in the tank, old gas will cause varnish to form on the valves and cause further valve sticking. Make sure the tank and fuel lines are clean before you run it off the tank old gas and crud from a dirty tank can cause a lot of problems such as stuck valves. After the fuel system has been cleared you can start on the ignition problems such as points cap plugs and pug wires. I've started many old trucks after long naps and these things need to be addressed before you can have a successful start and run.

You truck has GREAT potential. ttodd is right about that "tank and old gas". I usually diconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump and run the motor from a spare 5 gallon gas tank until the "original" system can be cleaned.

Cool truck my man. I see you have your yellow handle BFH wrench on the fender in pic one. Ditto on the don't use old gas noted above. BAD juu-juu in old gas.

yeah I did run some of the bad gads not smart of me realy, it ran but just not real well. THe other things I did was run a can of sea foam thru the gas as well as in the crankcase. I let it run for a while, today I will let it run some more and then change the oil.

This truck had a stuck valve about a year ago, dad and I discovered it. This stuck valve caused a pushrod to get bent. So we kinda hill billied it took the push rod out straightened it with a hammer put it back in and fire the truck up. I know this is archeic but at the time we were just seeing if we could get it run to sell it to a friend of mine.

This being said I need to pull the valve cover off and look at it run , and prbabaly put a set of push rods in it. the motor could use rebuilt but at this time I am going to try and run it the way it is.

ALso at this point the plans for the truick are to get it running right stopping right, get some good tires on it get it inspected and drive it as my weekend parts store lumber store vehicle. I also plan on taking the bed off and buildig aflatbed out of channel and either light cher plate, or wood. I think wood will be lighter. So if anyone needs the rements of a 3/4 ton bed keep me in mind.

How bad IS that box? Looks restorable enough to me.

Nice patina.. I also noted the 2 most important shade tree mechanic's tools.. BFH on one fender.. liquid mechanic loosener on the other. Extra points for having the loosener in a safety container.

Yeah I guess that bed is restorable, for the right person. It’s going to need two new fenders, new wood, new tail gate, and lots of grinding and bodywork. Where as I work for a mechanical contractor and have access to all kinds of metal fairly cheap.

The reason for new fenders if you look closely at them, the farmer who had the truck prior to dad having it, ran duallys. In order to do this he welded a 1/4 x 6" flat bar rolled as a fender flair on the rears to cover the second wheel. When he did this he first got out the ole hot knife and whacked about an inch and half to make clearance for the second wheel. Now, I would like to run duallys again but I would prefer a flatbed to do this.

And this truck will probably not be a restoration project as much as it will be used for local trips around town when I need a truck. I will do some body work and probably paint her up fairly nice but no show truck for sure. I have a 50 ford sedan for that that’s no where near either.

When gas went up I got a little jumpy and traded my full size pickup for a VW, pretty drastic change but I have found the money I was sinking into my Hemi in gas does a good job buying parts for the old truck.

Lastly those tools are of great importance while working on the truck :rolleyes:
