Where would this bugger be located on my 36 lowcab? I searched for the answer, but no luck.

According to the TechTips page (http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/VIN.htm) you should look on the inside or outside of the firewall or on the dashboard on pre-1939 trucks. It may also have gotten removed/lost so it may not be there at all. Who knows what's happened to it in the last 68 years. Good luck.

It should be on the right side of the cab/cowl under the hood, about 1/3 of the way from the top, on the side of the cowl, not the firewall side. Look for two small holes staggered as they drilled the VIN plate in opposite corners. It should be about 2x3 inch or slightly less. There are no other numbers on the truck so don't bother looking. Also, the VIN number used the original engine serial number, so if the engine has been changed, the VIN wouldn't match up anyway. JOE

As Joe stated, most states used the engine number as the VIN through 1955. Any number on the tag, it it's still there, would be the serial number. I know 38 & up the engine number is on a raised boss behind the distributer. On your 36 it may be closer to the front of the engine on the passenger side if I remember correctly. I don't remember the exact year the change was made.

Thanks for all ths info. I guess mine is long gone. No big deal. I was just trying to figure out why my number was so different from the others I have seen on-line, and the motor number makes since to me. The motore was deifnately changed out, so that is not original. I guess as long as I have a clear title in hand, the VIN plate does not matter. I just wanted to make sure mubers matched up, but I can see now that is not going to happen. Also, i was looking for build plant info, etc... With no real VIN plate, that is out of the question. This explains why I had so much trouble tryong to obtain a resto pack from GM. They had no way of pulling my truck info with the VIN number assigned to the truck from the state of Texas.

To bad its gone, its kinda neat knowing where it came from. The good news is, you have a good working title. It can be a pain with out one. Joe

My 47 has a confusing VIN on the title consisting of the original VIN with a string of numbers in front. After I sorted out the original VIN from the extra bit, I got my resto pack from Chevy using the original.

What do you guys think about the possiblity of a problem arising regarding the number on a title not being visible anywhere on the truck if the engine has been changed? I have heard a few rumblings of some problems with a title transfer when the number on the title is not evident anywhere on the truck.

Kind of weird, but I looked the cowl over with a fine tooth comb. No evidence of staggered rivet hole where one may have been, nothing. Maybe the guy who was riviting the VIN's that day called in sick... Who knows, but like I said, I got the clear title and that is my main concern.

6cylynderovertexas, I just transfered my '36 title into my name no problem. I did not get it inspected or anything, since it is in tear down stage, but it was no problem getting the title only. Your truck sure is sweet. I use to live up in Oakhurst. I wish I was still up that way so I could see that baby in person.
