I recently acquired a 1964 step side that I am planning to transform into something the kids and I can take to the local car shows and cruise-ins on the weekends. So far all I have done is spray the ol' girl down with some cleaner then pressure wash it to get the 4 years dirt off. So far i am only going to need to replace the front fenders and rockers on both sides. Next thing on the list is get some rollers on it , and get it fired up this weekend. any thoughts / comments are welcomed. http://community.webshots.com/album/559680194MALXet?vhost=community I know i need more pictures , but it has been raining non stop on my days off here. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Welcome aboard! looks like you've got a good project, there. Those fenders are available new, as are the rockers. Check out the Links section for dealers, or click on the American Classic link above. There's also lots of thing yoy can do should you want to upgrade it as well, but you'll want to decide on a direction (stock, modified, or somewhere in between) before you get too carried away. If you have any questions, just ask.

Looks like you have a nice project truck. As mentioned, you can get parts from a variety of after market vendors. I bought most of the parts I needed from LMC Truck but there are several other suppliers and from what I have read here, most are pretty much the same as far as quality goes. Heck, do a search on Ebay. I came across a couple of the parts I needed there. Got a brand new dash pad and a brand new rear bumper for my '70 stepside on Ebay and saved money even with the higher shipping fees.
Glad to have you on board and good luck with your truck. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 2,422 Former Workshop Owner | | Former Workshop Owner Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 2,422 | Nice looking project. Welcome to the "Bolt".

well i got her jacked up and on blocks so i can get some cheap tires from my ocal shop for rollers. I attempted top fire up the 230 just to see what it would do. Fire it up is exactly what i did too, after about 10 minutes messing with the wirning that had been hacked to pieces by past owner and the family of mice that made a home in the breather pan. I was in the cab turning the wipers and stuff off , then i turned the key to see if it would turn over. I was excited to hear the motor spin , but about 15 seconds later the wife SCREAMS , HONEY YOU TRUCK IS ON FIRE!! the starter had flames coming off of it. Thank goodness for my gloves because that battery cable was so hot it was starting to melt. I got it off just in time.
plan B is going to be just go ahead and yank it out since i have to rewire it anyway. Instead of doing it twice i will just go ahead and swap in the 350. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | Looks like ya got a pretty solid 64 there.Plenty of room for a 350 in there.I have a 65 with a 500 Caddy in it.Keep us posted on your progress. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 76 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 76 |

I found a 305 ( go ahead and laugh its ok) i found a good running 305 with a 700r4 tranny really cheap on craigslist. i went to look at it , my trusty block/head casting list in hand. turns out its a late model roller motor with the 58cc chambered HO heads on it. probably running about 9.6:1 compression. once I stick a big ugly cam and some 1.6 rockers in it and change out the stock intake for my FREE edelbrock aluminum intake with 650 4 barrell (gotta love friends that have too much stuff laying around) and a few MSD goodies I should be pushing close to 340hp and sounding very good at the same time. and hopefully i will only have about $400 into the whole thing. I know there are the na sayers out there cringing at the thought of using a 305. The way i see it , this 305 will get me down the street, will do a big ole burn out if i want it too, and is going to sound like a top fuel dragster scaring all those crate motor guys. so in the end it will make me giggle inside knowing what it is and they will just have to wonder.
does anyone happen to know what headers will fit in there the best? I would love a set of long tubes just for the look, but if huggers or shorties are all that will fit guess ill have to take em. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 45 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 45 | Not sure what headers were on my truck (they fit) but couldn't stand them. Hard to change plugs , sounded like poop (to many leaks) and ran to far out under the cab. Put a set of ram horns on and could be happier. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,895 Socket Breaker | | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,895 | bigpoppa64 - welcome to the 'bolt!

the new motor and tranny are complete painted , chromed and ready to drop in. I removed the old trans cross member since it was in the way of the new 700r4. once i get them dropped in i will fab up a new mount for it. the cab will be coming off so i can clean and paint the frame and replace the cab supports and floor pans before it goes back on. I lucked out on some parts again for almost free, my friend did some trading and in the process he got a 93 mustang bracket racing car.he sold the car already , but before he did i talked him into letting me have the COMPLETE fuel system. ( holley blue pump, a big holley filter, regulator , fuel pressure gauge, all the relays, 12 gallon rci fuel cell , 15 feet of braided steel line and all of the fittings up to the carb. I also scored the 3 inch x-pipe and 2 flowmaster outlaw race mufflers and turn downs to go on the truck. If you have heard these mufflers you know how good it is going to sound. (living in a rural area the police wont say anything about the sound levels =)) so now i get to take the tank out of the cab and begin fabing up the brackets under the bed for the new tank.I am also looking into relocating the battery to the frame rail under the bed somewhere to help clean up the engine compartment. I will try to post new pics tonight. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 25 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 25 | I thought this day would never come . My finacial advisor (wife) gave me the go ahead to build my shop. She even said i could start ordering parts for the truck after i finish the garage. It isnt going to be anything fancy , post and beam framing with metal siding. 24x24 with 2 10' doors and 1 regular walk thru door on the side. It beats the heck out of working under my carport and 6x8 metal storage shed. I Have made good progress on it so far, the biggest thing slowing me down is I have done 95% of this by myself. My neighbor came over with his lasers and helped me get it all squared up and all the posts braced, and another neighbor loaned me his C02 powered framing nail gun. ( man that thing is awesome) lifting thos 12' long 2x12's and holding them in place while i nailed them was very interesting. I cant wait to get it finished and move the truck out there so i can start working on it. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2084614230101651684mSWnpZ | | |
