Have any of you run into situations where a person is selling a truck without a title? How do you get it titled? I was told that you can buy titles from another state, in Hemmings, for $25.00.
I would appreciate your comments. I am hesitant to buy without one.

Welcome to the Stovebolt pages.

Titles have been discussed many times before. Use the "search" link right below "post new topic".

I don't know about the hemmings information, but in the past I've used International Title Service out of Las Vegas. It costs $150 and takes about a month to get the paperwork back. Essentially what happens is you 'sell' them the car or truck, and they take the information to Alabama and register it. Vehicles in Alabama manufactured prior to 1984 require no title. What you get back is a legit current registration certificate from that state and a bill of sale back to you.
All you need to do is apply for a change of ownsership at your DMV and a new title. That's been my experience.

I'd ask the title people at your DMV. Here in SC, the process would be to go to the county magistrate's office and get a Bill of Sale from them for an abandoned vehicle. Going in with just a bill of sale from another owner gets you no where and you're treated like you stole the vehicle. The DMV will run a vehicle history check to see if it's been reported stolen, if not they will then proceed with issuing a new title in your name. But the process varies state-to-state, some will give you a title with a handwritten bill of sale.

One tip I've learned... no matter how wrong they are on the other side of the counter, treat them like they're 100% correct. The quicker they process the paperwork, the faster you get your title... and that's your ultimate goal.

My response is that if its that easy they can get me the title and I'll pay for their trouble. I even gave one guy some money up front to get me the title.

The laws vary state to state, but as a rule they are getting tougher everywhere. The state I live in, Washington, does not easily accept title transfers from Alabama.

Here in Minden, Nevada, our DMV looks less like a government building and more like a country cafe... walk right in a get service. I've even had a guy there help me fudge some paperwork before. It's not hardly as bureaucratic as many places. I've had to help my pop with some vehicle issues at the Reno DMV though so I know how it can be. Bunch of nonsense.

In Canada it may be different but I bought two trucks both without titles but had them registered to me by having the guy who sold them to me go to a justice of peace and make a declaration that they were derelict vehicles and that no one had claim to them. This form was obtained from the ministry of transportation. They did a search, couldn't find them and I walked out with ownership

The same applies in Oregon as any police officer can do a vin inspection. The trouble is you have to bring it to them. It helps to know someone maybe they'll sign it off for you. Also as far as having no title, I've transferred titles and vin plates from a parts trucks. It's all about the paperwork.

In Delaware if you have a notorized bill of sale and they inspect it they will issue you a title .I have 5 trucks with titles.I bought one in Vermont and had to go through this process. They will do an at home inspection if you can not get the truck to them.
