I know that you should not over grease but am wondering if the grease only comes out the one side of the shackle bolt, is the whole bolt getting grease?

If surplus grease comes only from one side, it is most likely that the shackle is stressed towards the other side. Don't worry. As soon as the bushing begins to work (on the road) the grease will be evenly distributed through the bearing surfaces.

Using a manual grease gun. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 | Either the nipple is seized or there's too much muck packed inside the channel. Buy some replacement nipples: in straight, 45 and 90 degree inlets. Take the old one out, and to test it run a bit of grease through it. If it flows well, the problem is deeper. That being the case, you can usually clear the mess just inside there with a pick. An additional measure is to soften the muck a bit with a propane torch. Heat it gently. These measures have rarely failed. When you're done, grease it more often. That will keep things happier in there.

The shackles/bolts are new as are the nipples with about 500 miles on them. I like playing with the grease gun so I usually lube all the fittings every 1000 miles. In the case of the shackle bolts they were greased when installed and I have greased them twice since. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 35 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 35 | A little more work, but if you can jack up under the frame to relieve the loading on the springs, you just might be able to get the grease to go in a little bit easier. That should cause the grease to more evenly coat the shackle bolts.

I am glad we have so much talent on this Forum, sure helps. We don't know it all but each of us knows a little something and it adds up.
