thought someone could help me to decipher the last portion of the vin code for my 58 cameo pickup. so far i haven't heard a word. are'nt there any code busters(vin)out there? any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

L = LosAngeles plant
102212 = assembly sequence number [serial#]

I read earlier that all cameos were built in Flint? Is that true?

no it's not .... your VIN shows the truck was built in LA, and I wouldn't be suprised if more Cameos were sold in California then elsewhere - why would they ship a complete truck clear across the country when they could get by just shipping some fiberglas panels, the entire truck except for the plastic rear parts was identical to any 1/2T step side, fully optioned

any truck down the line in any of the 10 or 12 plants was either a "standard", spec truck for the lot, or an ordered "job number", assembled to order in among the rest

Bill you seem to know your chevy trucks. Is there a way to establish by the vin what number truck (specifically)Cameo my truck was built. ie; #212 or 12 or 2212. They only made 1405 in 58 so 2212 may represent the production # of all or various 1/2 ton p/u,s produced in that year. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Dave

I'd guess the 2212 is just the order your truck was produced in that specific plant.. and the 2212 may not even represent the production order of that particular model (1/2 ton) but could just be the 2212th truck that particular plant spit out that year.

yes, what Fumblin sez, the different models weren't numbered sequentially, just part of the general flow, it would have been the 2,212th truck of any model made in LA for that calender year, it might have been the only Cameo on a given day, and with something like 275,000 commercial vehicles built in '58 [don't know what percentage was produced at LA, but I'd think at least 30,000 or more], and the Cameo dropped mid year, I'd guess it was built at the end of 57, when 58 production first started, and likely before the beginning '58 .... the resto pak from GM might have more specific info from your VIN, tho' I don't think they did too well with records back then

and you may get some clues about the month built from date codes on original parts, like block casting, trans, rear end

I imagine Chevrolet numbered their production the same way GMC did. If so each plant and each series (i.e.3100, 3800, etc.) started at 1001.

cletis has a point. this was taken from the Stovebolt Tech Tips section regarding '56 thru '59 trucks..

Cletis - the 1001 start was for pre-53 production, in 53 they changed to 001001 to start, until 55, in 56 the numbering sequence started at 100001, at each plant for general production, not each series .... it continued that way until 1971 when it changed to 800001 starting number each plant .... Peg! the tech tip is wrong
