Nobody? I count five people in this thread who were going to bag some of this stuff.. just want to see if this miracle spray lived up to the hype.

I received my GIBBS last week and promptly applied it to three grilles on my '65 & '66 Chevy trucks. Two of the grilles were the remanufactured units that come from LMC/Chevy Duty and the likes. They had developed some surface rust on the top surface of the lower bar. Without steel wool, I was able to remove the surface rust while applying with a terry cloth towel. The third grille was a factory anodized aluminum unit that needed to be freshened up. The GIBBS did a nice job on all three. I will be using it from this point forward. Thanks for the tip.

Robin, who's opinion I trust says Gibbs works great for coating chrome and preventing reappearance of minor surface rust.. and was less expensive than comparable products.

But was the, and I quote, "highly touted capabilities of penetrant, rust remover etc that I found it lacking in."

That ain't hating, that's being skeptical when such a wide range of claims are made about a product.. especially ones like one Gibbs Brand distributor makes.. that PC professionals use Gibbs Brand to lubricate the bearings in their hard drives.

Uhh huh. Sure they do. Anybody who believes that probably not only lubricates the bearings in their brain (via their nose) with Gibbs, but also uses Gibbs Brand to treat yeast infections and ringworm.

And apparently, Gibbs Brand was as effective at removing rust from an aluminum toolbox as a soggy wad of tolit paper would have been.. which might explain why AD didn't report great results when trying to clean up his aluminum step pads.

So no.. it's not 'hating'.. it's being skeptical. Your mileage may vary.

I'm still waiting to hear from the guys in this thread who bought the stuff to hear how it worked out for them.

The verdict is still out. I purchased the product, and even received it. Haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Will attempt to do so this weekend, and report back on the results.

I like this stuff - works well for me.
For application I use cheap paint brushes.
I use it mostly to prevent rust on bare metal.

I was able to work on the grill a bit this afternoon. Didn't work long, or very hard at it, but as promised, I wanted to show you and the rest of the followers of this thread my results.

In this photo, I cleaned half the grill with Gibbs, and left the other half clearly showing the amount of rust I had to deal with.

I'll let the rest of you guys judge for yourselve's. However, for me, the $20+ bucks I spent on the Gibbs was worth the results I received.

I have a question. If you follow the link for David Mann at roadster.com which displays the Ford 32 Coupe and another vehicle he has sprayed with Gibbs to prevent the rust from returning after he DA'd it (miraculously filling in dents and holes), exactly what is the correct procedure for removing Gibbs before painting? I realize they state you can paint over it, but I would seriously doubt any paint manufacturer is going to agree to this. You want an epoxy primer to adhere itself to the metal not some intersealant. Need to use the DA again? Will a standard Wax and Grease remover take care of this? Anyone who has used this stuff for a long time ever painted over it?

From what I've read, after applying GIBBS, you use the suggested cleaner and paint. Period.

I have a nephew who is a pro' painter ... he couldn't believe this was true -- until he tried it. He said it *is* so! You don't need a primer ... but I think I'd prime anyway.

It took me a minute or two to figure out your trouser's comment. I hadn't even noticed the reflection in the grill picture. Probably would have been quite the site had I been wearing shorts, rather than the jeans.

After seeing your results, and hearing Robins review, i'm sold on Gibbs for cleaning up and protecting chrome.

If you get the chance to put Gibbs to the test on rust on metal, or using it as a penetrant, let us know.
