For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 | I have just gotten my new lower A arm shafts and am in the process of installing them as the old ones were bad. I have them loosely hun by the "U" bolts and would like to know the procedure for getting the large end bolts adjusted so I can take it to a shop for proper alignment. It seems they get tight on the arm before the shafts and seals are tight. Any sugestions? I appreciate this. Gary in Mich.

You should post what year and model yours is. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 | Sorry. This is a '66 fleetwood that I am putting in new suspension but can't figure out how to adjust the large nuts on the ends of the A arm rods. These are the ones with the grease fittings on the ends. Thanks

Just picking on you-the shaft should be centered in the A-arm, the book shows a distance of 3/4 inch between the edge of A-arm & the seal surface of the shaft, the bushings need torqued to 125-140 ft/lbs. I used an air impact, of course. The inside of the nut threads into the shaft. It seems you tighten the big nuts to the A arm and then can move the shaft as well. I appreciate the help. G.

The shaft should move when done, but it will be stiff. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 | OK but how can the shaft move if it is tightly attached to the frame by the U bolts? The U bolts go around the shaft. Hmmmmm

Perhaps rotate is a better term, the shaft must rotate when you are finished. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 84 | Thanks a lot. Now I get it. Good explanation. I guess I am a little dense.

I don't think it should be neccessary to check the profile of the poster of every thread you open. And what if you did open it and find out the guy has a '42 and a '52? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | Originally posted by cletis: I believe people should include what truck with their question. Well, I assumed since he said lower a-arms we were dealing with a 60-72, since he is dealing w/a lower shaft(not a torsion bar) that narrows it to 63-72, & all those use the same lower arms & mounting setup. | | |
