was gonna try to start my 61 apache today, but when fuel got to the "rebuilt" carb, gas spewed all over my freshly painted exhaust and intake from the throttle plate shaft. I also noticed that the choke doesnt seem to choke when I use the cable that seems to work fine. So I have decided to rid myself of this carb and go in search of another. I am contemplating replacement with a newer monojet with a automatic choke, but not sure if there are any that will fit the intake. Also considering a 2 bbl adapter, and a newer Rochester as an option. Any one care to offer their thoughts and opinions about what I am thinking about? I would appreciate the input. The truck is otherwise stock with a 235, and is to be used as a daily driver, no hot rodding intended for this one. (thats for my 68 CST to handle) Thanks in advance for the knowledgeable input. There should be all kinds of options for you. Check out Patrick's for example. My '61 retains the Rochester with the stock choke and throttle cable and works very nicely. There are enough Rochesters out there to create a large knowledge base, and therefore you should be able to have what you want. A good running stock carb that doesn't leak fuel. You can pick up a professionally rebuilt one from any number of vendors AND have a warranty with it if it does puke out the gas.(90 days typical) Have fun.

I see you stumbled onto the biggest problem with Rochester carbs, throttle body wear around the shaft. This can be remedied by bushing the hole and/or increasing the shaft diameter.

If you want to remain with the one bbl, cars of the era had auto choke, and will bolt right on. If you want to go with a 2 bbl progressive, another place to call is Stovebolt Engine Company, Tom sells rebuilt Holley-Weber carbs, refered to here as Pinto carbs.
