I have a dab of green paint on my '52 3600 front axle. I've read somewhere that GM did this during assembly. I can't remember where I read it...maybe here or a book.
Does anyone have any more info about this?

That looks like a wrecking yard marker to me.

It's not a wrecking yard marker, it's about 4 inches long. It's from an unmolested 35,000 mile truck. I know I've read about this somewhere.
It's not real important, I just find historical stuff interesting and thought someone here might know.

I found the same markings on my 1950, 3604 when I scraped the grease and mud off.
I think maybe Forrest Green Tim!

Here you go out of the 1955 master parts (you guys have em) "46-52 3/4ton (exc D-D) ........(forged 3681642) (has dab or green paint) 3680905 1 $22.75" that would make it a replacement axel

This is the latest copy that I have and it mirrors what the member above found.
So here ya go, out of the "1929-1950 Master Parts Catalog" page 293, gp.6.008, pn.3680905 ----1946-50 'HR' (w/Forge No. 3681642)(has dab of green paint)$18.75.
That is exactly what I have in my '50,3604 and to me that would indicate that it is the original axle that was in the truck. If the last post was implying that the parts ordered from the parts catalog are different, I believe that is incorrect. Although the parts ordered from the parts catalog are "replacement" parts, that does not mean that they have different forging numbers or are marked diferently that the original parts. They are "factory replacement" parts and exactly the same as an original part.
