I didn't locate any casting numbers on the block but the head has 3836848 on it. I realize it is very likely the head is not original to the block but does that number identify the head to any degree.
With a lot of digging and scraping I should be able to find something on the block. Where exactly would a casting number be on it.

That is a higher compression 235 head that I think first became available in 1956 (and it might have been used through 1962). It will work on any 235 block from 1954 onwards (with some minor modifications needed to the rocker-arm oil feed line/tube, depending on the year of the rocker arm assembly). It can also be used on 261 blocks but needs additional holes (between the paired cylinders) for adequate coolant flow.
See if you can find the engine serial number (pressed into the block to the rear of the distributor) and the block casting number (at the upper right of the starter).

Would the engine casting # by the starter be mostly behind the starter. It looked like there might be a # mostly hid by the starter. The stamping on the pad behind the distributer has been ground off. I'll do some more looking when I get out to the farm again. It is kind of dark in the shed.

Yes, the block casting code is partially hidden by the starter.
Sorry about not carefully reading your first message about the ground of serial number. That most likely indicates that it is a replacement engine (and the replacement engine was installed in a state that uses that engine code for Title/Registration) - you probably know this.
What is the Code/VIN on your title/registration, if you have one?

I don't have the title # handy but yes it is the engine # and is consistent with a '50 pickup.
The engine definitely has been replaced because it has Hyd lifters.
It really doesn't matter a lot but I am just trying to get an idea of the origin of the engine.
I will try to get the block casting #.
