on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 53 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 53 | i have torn down my 235 to the block still in the truck, i need help on the bell housing area of the removal... Do remove the engine with the bell housing on the engine or can i disconnect the bell housing from the engine and just pull the block out. I hope this dont sound stupid but this is my first time pulling out an engine that was not an air cooled vw. the donor engine came from a 62 chevy truck and is a 261, i just pulled the bell housing out with the engine and left the transmission in the truck, I think that i have to do the same to my 235 in my truck, i cant slide the transmission back enough to clear the spline so i will have to pull the engine forward and up out of the truck, i put a stand under the transmission so that i will not fall with i lift it out.
what are the procedures of pulling out an inline six near the rear of the engine?
any help would be great.

When I pulled it out for the rebuild, I took out the radiator and front cowl assembly but that was because I removed the engine and tranny as an assembly. Is your radiator still in and not giving you enough wiggle room to the front? http://community.webshots.com/user/geezer | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | Hey Jeff, what year is your truck? Some of the details vary by year...
1955 1st GMC Suburban | 1954 GMC 250 trailer puller project | 1954 GMC 250 Hydra-Matic | 1954 Chevy 3100 . 1947 Chevy COE | and more... It's true. You can also pull the engine with the front sheet metal in place, a bit more tricky but it can be done. The bellhousing cannot be separated from the engine without first removing the clutch and flywheel, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | You can unbolt the tranny and slide it back. Since there are no tranny mounts on the AD truck you will either have to block it up or lay it on the floor. Then the engine will come out with the hood off, provided your hoist goes high enough to clear the radiator support. Pull the radiator first, so you don't damage it. Removing the bell housing/clutch is easiest with the engine out of the truck, I usually lay the engine on it's side on sawhorses for that.

I second the remove the rad, grill and all that stuff to slide it out the front.
Good Luck. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 53 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 53 | my truck is an ice cream truck Picture here i did get the 235 out with the bell housing left on the block, i had to remove the radiator, fan, and the alternator for added clearence, this p10 stepvan does not open in the front so i had to pull the engine out the side door. like fred t says i had to block up the transmission so it would not fall, i am amazed that there is no transmission mount for it, i hope that i get this back together right Do i need to use my 235 bellhousing or the 261? i am using the 261 that is being rebuilt. i dont know about the differances of the two engines... i have never seen sooo much crud under a car in my life, i mean inches thick of road crap and grease , i bet i just scraped off 5 pounds of crud today... thanks jeff | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 | Jeff, the bell housings are the same, all of the parts will interchange between them as the only difference is the 261 has larger pistons and rods, all else is the same. Where are you in La. I'm in metairie,La
