Hey all,
I am new to the world of inline 6s and need some help. I recently aquired a 62 C10 Stepside with the motor and tranny sitting in the bed. I dont know if this is the original engine and trans, but I am going to try to get them up and running none the less. My question is, is this a 230 or a 250? Heres the numbers I found on it. Drivers side: CON2 D177 3877178 GM 44. Pass side: 34 7178. From Inliners.org the 3877178 means its a 62-78 230-250 from Buick, Olds, chevy, Pontiac or GMC. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

62 was the last year they used the 235 and the only year that the 261 was available as an option in light duty trucks. If it is a 230 or 250, it's not the original motor. They started using those in 63.

62 came out with the old stovebolt 235. If the numbers show it,s a 230-250 it,s not the original engine.

OK, now its starting to make more sense to me. The fact that its not the original engine doesnt really bother me all that much, but is there a way to decipher between the 230 and the 250? Thanks for all of the information and keep it rolling in!!!

Hawks62, I just recently went through the same thing with my L6...trying to determine a) if it was original and b) what the cube was. There are very few visible differences between the 230 and 250. This might vary per a given year, but for example in 1966, the stroke on a 230 is 3.25 and on a 250 it is 3.53 (Source MOTOR Manual 1967). You might try the suffix code, which is a two or three letter code that trails the engine serial number stamped into a pad just aft of the distributor. There are a couple of websites you can Google for suffix codes. Most of them are V-8 only, but I remember finding one or two sites that had L6 suffix codes. Here is one example: http://www.chevellestuff.com/69velle/69engine.htm

Good info, ChuckTheTruck. For a long time I thought the 250 was new in '67. Now I see it was new in '66. Never too old to learn something, believe you me!

I just received my Chevrolet Inline-Six Power Manual by Leo Santucci (an excellent source for inliners) and he states that the 230 and the 250 are identical except for the the stroke. The 230 has a 3.250" stroke while the 250 has a 3.530" stroke. So I plan to measure this today and find out just what the heck I have. Thanks to everyone who has responded.
